Hamptons Style, indulging in an easy, breezy affluence

Hamptons inspired flatlay

When you picture what a quintessential Hamptons style home is, perhaps you picture the apple pie perfection of a Ralph Lauren ad – all whites, linens, pops of blue and lots of oversized furniture? Maybe the relatively new to Australian shores, Pottery Barn has added a little of that fresh and entertainment-friendly style of décor onto your mood boards. What is common is it's easy, elegant style with a love of space and open plan living and entertaining. You will not replicate this look authentically in a two-bedroom apartment.

Just like in Texas, everything is bigger and better in the Hamptons. It is an exclusive area which serves as a drawcard for celebrities and wealthy families such as the Lauders, who appreciate the generous floorplans and high ceilings the local style dictates. Craftsmanship reigns supreme in the stealth luxury of the Hamptons style. Kitchens are the centrepiece for entertaining and rather than being tucked away, their galley style or central island benches become a hub for guests to mingle. With this in mind, naturally the kitchen has become a focal point and an emphasis on striking surfaces is vital. Benchtops are marble or granite. Subway tiles or penny rounds in white, black or dove grey dominate.

Décor is as simple as fresh vases of flowers or fruit bowls with stacked coffee table books. Space for entertaining is vital, so everything is expansive and comfortable. High ceilings, sometimes with exposed or whitewashed beams, often house ceiling fans to gently circulate the air. Natural light plays a role too with plenty of large floor-to- ceiling windows hung with sheer gauze curtains or shutters, opening onto generous balconies, which ideally capture the ocean breeze.

Furniture is built to last, without succumbing to trends or novelty but are rather uniformly oversized dimensions, low-lying and luxuriously welcoming. The softness of the fabrics balances the very square or rectangular angles of sofas, tables, chaise longues and bench seating. Lighting is either grand in design, such as chandeliers or somewhat industrial with oversized dome style pendant lights. Furnishings adhere to a neutral palette, featuring soft cottons and linen with lots of white. Cabinetry features subtle metal or powder coated fixtures. Often shelving and cabinets are open with items on display, down lights providing illumination.

Floorboards or intricate tiles are used throughout, with scattered rugs delineating separate spaces rather than wall to wall carpet for an almost genteel country vibe. Wood from flooring and furniture is white or subtly tonal, adding texture.

We have a range of basketweave and Hamptons inspired mosaics in store!

Marble is very much at home in bathrooms and also used for benchtops and kitchen islands. Bathrooms, as with the rest of a Hamptons style house are generous in size, often featuring a double basin. Floor tiling is where this style gets creative. I love to work within the Hamptons décor style, because we have some truly beautiful products that are ideal to incorporate to achieve this look. Think basket weave or chevron Carrara marble. Mosaics in a hexagon or penny round are also hugely popular. Colours remain neutral with whites, marble, greys and natural shades of blush, coffee and copper. Interest is created through the integration and mix of patterns and sizes of tiles.

Travertine is magic in a larger room, while my personal recommendation would be our Botticino Marble tumbled French pattern mosaic for its interesting lines. It is the use of these patterns within the tiles that stop the project from being too bland or beige. The look aspires to be fresh, clean and family friendly.
