Black and White, Designers’ Delight.

This week’s post is brought to you by the classic anthem for the glamorous life, Vogue by Her Madgesty, Madonna. -

Arguably the most classically beautiful interior design continues to be the power of black and white. Don’t just take my word for it:

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” - Coco Chanel -

Coco said it best of course. As the queen of refined and understated perfection (and the timeless white camellia motif), she instinctively knew that these two tones served to imbue a space with a sense of grace and power. Way back in time, as a conscientious art student, I learned all about the Italian concept and technique of chiaroscuro – the interplay of light and shade, both revealing and concealing. If you approach the theme of black and white with this concept in mind, you have a true tip in making the most of your space – highlighting the best aspects, while shading less favourable areas. Black and white usually creates a sense of formalness and sombreness to their environment – tuxedos, little black dresses and judges.

Black and white these days however, is not synonymous with a stark, traditionally heavily European or cold ambience. Byzantine Design has curated a stunning gallery of tiles designed to be impactful with their decadent style or simply provide tonal perfection to your project. That is the beauty of black and white, you can create a contemporary hotel-like space or a vintage/deco retreat, all depending on the contrast and complementary tiles integrated in your project.

We have the ubiquitous subway tiles in black, white or crackle white
tile as a backdrop to a more modern or vintage design. We have stunning Federation style boldly patterned encaustics such as the floral motif and we have numerous glazed mosaic penny rounds in both shades too.

Whether it is black and white marble, glass or ceramic it is a combination that will not date. It is timeless elegance.

That's it from us for this week, 'til next time our tile obsessed friends...

XOXO Byzantine Design

Changing the World one tile at a time.
